Accessibility is a priority at Darchei Noam, whether in terms
of our physical space, the learning needs of our children, or our Web site.
Recently there was a ramp installed at our parking lot entrance.
Our Hove Street entrance is completely wheelchair accessible.
During High Holy Day services, this door remains open. At any other occasion,
simply have someone walk in the parking-lot door and ask the security
(always at their desk) to open the Hove door.
The elevators remain functioning during Shabbat and Holy Days, for
anyone who feels the need to use them. There is a wheelchair-accessible
washroom on the ground floor.
There is always reserved handicapped seating next to the aisle in any service.
We all respect those signs.
And finally, there are no stairs or other obstacles leading to our bimah,
so that everyone may be honoured in comfort.
Access keys allow people whose physical limitations make it hard for
them to use the mouse, to access pages via key strokes instead. If you
are using Windows, press the ALT key and the access key at
the same time, then return. If you are using a Macintosh, press the
CTRL key and the access key, then return.
Unfortunately, not all
browsers support access keys.
Blind people can browse the Web using screen readers - software that generates either speech or Braille output. However, reading the sidebar links on every page could get tedious. On all our menu sidebars, there is an extra "menu item" which is invisible to a sighted reader. A screen reader will detect this item before reading through the whole menu. The link on the skip menu item will direct the screen reader to the top of the page contents.
